Acer Palmatum ‘Tangerine Sunup’

Tangerine Sunup
(Japanese Maple)

It seems there will be no end to the variants from Mikawa Yatsubusa. The structure on this one is similar to Mikawa. Observations of the parent, and the limited progeny, indicate that it may lean towards a more lateral configuration. We will have to revisit that in a few years to see if that habit holds true.

Foliage:
The foliage attachment is very similar to its predecessor with leaves stacked and layered all along the primary twigs and branches. The leaves are coral when first unfurling, with lighter shades of yellow orange in the veins and towards the base. When fully open the transitioning hues range from terracotta to tangerine-pink with expanding yellow veins. The next stage is melon yellow when full size and finally a
medium green a few weeks after most of the spring flush has concluded. The fall color is red to red-orange.

Bark:
No pertinent ornamental traits.

Flower:
No pertinent ornamental traits.

Fruit:
Fruit set are typical bright red samaras contrasted against
the green leaves, showy.

Size:
Height 3.5’ –4.5’
Width 4.5’ to 5’
Considering the lineage, I would expect the size to be similar – growth rates on this one average 6-8” per year under cultivation. The sizes below are estimates over a 10-year period in the landscape.

Zone:
5

While this form was introduced by us in August of 2024 as one of two with similar coloration, the other
will likely be named and released 2025 or 2026.
